I use this technique daily (for almost all our first ascents on roofs). Often, I'll use the Big Shot Slingshot (arborist tool) to launch the bean bag over the roof if the distance is far. We use fall protection on every job. 20 years of roofing and we've had 3 falls, ... and 3 saves (each with a different person). Any one of those would have been life changing if not fatal. Fall protection on the 1st ascent is simple with the right gear and training. This simple repair is small, but without the rope, it would be very dangerous. From the moment I pulled up, until I left, the time was only 1.5 hours. Safe access set up did not take long, and I billed for it of course. The client is very happy to pay for the time for us to work safely. Nobody wants to come home and find out someone is lying in their driveway with a broken leg or worse. You may notice the gear we use is not the normal "compliance" safety in a bucket that you can buy at a local lumber store. That gear is prehistoric, and deadly (in my opinion) for steep roofing.
