SPACE JAM" by JL SHiNOBi | Music Video/Documentary Short | 1958's "Birth of Formula 1 Air Racing" I discovered this 16mm film reel 2yrs ago in my Grandfather's archives as part of the Tom Cassutt Aviation Preservation Project. I just got it digitized for my upcoming documentary series which seamlessly overlaps with my multi-volume book series "THE TOM CASSUTT CHRONICLES | How a Self-Taught Engineer Immortalized Formula 1 Air Racing". I created the music score so this serves as both a music video for the theme song "SPACE JAM" as well as an intro thesis to the book & documentary series. Tom was a golden age aviation pioneer and is famous for designing + piloting his homebuilt bright yellow CASSUTT SPECIAL 111 sport/racer monoplane & . His 71yr old design represents over 90% of the current day's International F1 aircraft fleet and is the longest active engineering design in aviation & motor sports history. This 16mm was sent to my Grandfather in the late 60's by Frank Guidates, one of the most prominent and respected journalists/photographers/aviation historians for 50yrs. It documents Tom's historic victory at the 1958 National Air Races in Ft Wayne, IN where he defeated the great Steve Wittman by 5 seconds (most races were won by fractions of a second) ending his 30yr reign and domination over the sport of air racing, ushering in a new generation while simultaneously giving birth to the Formula 1 sport we know today. Frank used this footage for his historic groundbreaking 1960 documentary movie "AIR RACING: THE BIRTH OF FORMULA 1" so this 16mm film reel is Frank's actual unedited production footage along w/ footage he captured during 3 magazine photo/video shoots covering the same material (Sport Aviation, FLIGHT Magazine, & Model Airplane News). My book series includes the original articles + the original masters for all the photos Frank 1950's "WW2 GUN CAMERA GO-PROs" used in Air Racing! This film is considered groundbreaking because of their utilization of converted WW2 Gun Cameras with "rapid-release mounting brackets" mounted all over the airplanes including under the wings, wingtips, tail, cockpit, front, undercarriage, etc. The cameras were wired to the cockpits so the pilot could use buttons + triggers to control the cameras and switch between the different views just like you would in current times using a video switcher board. They also used 35 mm lens adapters like wide angle, telephoto, etc. Gun site cameras were used in to confirm enemy kills and 100% destruction of missions' military targets. In fact 90% of the World War II footage we see in documentaries today come from these gun site cameras. These guys were all World War II Pilots so they had tons experience modifying and hacking these cameras. They used that knowledge to capture shots that would be way too dangerous to attempt in current days. This gives viewers an unprecedented behind the scenes front-row seat of the golden age of aviation and air racing from the eyes of history's most famous pilots, photographers, and aviators. Majority of these pilots and their planes are in the Smithsonian Museum and plenty others throughout the world. Therefore its extremely rare and will make a big impact in the aviation and air racing world when its released along with The Tom Cassutt Chronicles Book Series. I have 8 more 16mm reels being digitized as we speak so more unreleased golden age footage coming soon. Stay tuned folks PS: Fuck Charles Lindbergh, he ain't the REAL aviator like these guys. He was too scared to race these giants so he stuck to pipsquek single-person feats like flying across a pond. FACTS
