Coronavirus: Fauci testifies before Congress as COVID-19 cases surge in the U.S. | FULL

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, testified on Friday before a coronavirus subcommittee in Congress, weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration first refused to let him address the panel. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield and Admiral Brett Giroir, assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, also testified. Fauci said at the hearing that he was "cautiously optimistic" there will be a vaccine for coronavirus by "end of this year and as we go into 2021," and also addressed concerns that the vaccine trials were moving too fast. "I know to some people this seems like it is so fast that there might be compromising of safety and scientific integrity, I can tell you that's absolutely not the case," he said. Fauci added that the FDA commissioner "assured" him that the decision to approve a vaccine would be based on data "proving the safety and efficacy." He urged Americans to take the vaccine when one comes available. The country's top doctor also resisted Rep. Jim Jordan's questioning about whether protests increase the spread of COVID-19 and if they should be limited by the government. Fauci would not answer directly, saying he is not in a position to determine “what the government can do in a forceful way,” but that crowding when not wearing masks contributes to the spread of the virus. Fauci’s testimony came at the end of a week when the pandemic’s tragic toll on the country has become far clearer. The United States on Wednesday experienced its 150,000th death from the disease — more than any other country — and data on Thursday showed a deep economic plunge as well.
