Stephen Kaweesa, widely known by supporters as “Commander 001,” is a Ugandan political activist who gained attention through his grassroots mobilization work within the opposition movement led by Bobi Wine. Kaweesa became particularly visible during political organizing efforts linked to the opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP), one of the most prominent political movements challenging the long-standing government in Uganda. His name later became widely discussed online after he made controversial claims regarding money he allegedly spent during the process of seeking political support and party endorsement. The controversy emerged during preparations for the parliamentary race in Nansana Municipality, an urban constituency located near Kampala. Kaweesa sought to run for Member of Parliament under the banner of the National Unity Platform. However, during the party’s internal selection process, the official NUP ticket for the Nansana Municipality seat was awarded to journalist and television presenter Zambali Bulasio Mukasa instead of Kaweesa. The decision created tensions among some supporters and triggered public criticism from Kaweesa, who expressed disappointment with how the internal selection process had been handled. Following the dispute, Kaweesa made statements in which he claimed that he had spent large amounts of money while trying to secure political backing and mobilize support ahead of the elections. Among the claims circulating online was an allegation that as much as 600 million Ugandan shillings had been given in connection with political activities surrounding his attempt to obtain the NUP ticket. The claim quickly spread across social media platforms and political discussion forums, fueling debates among supporters and critics of the opposition movement. Despite the widespread discussion of these claims, there has been no widely documented evidence confirming that such a payment was made directly to Bobi Wine or to the National Unity Platform leadership. Most references to the alleged amount originate from Kaweesa’s own statements and commentary shared on social media. Without independent verification or official documentation, the allegation remains unproven and continues to be treated cautiously by many political observers and analysts.
