Identifying thrips or pests on your houseplants can be difficult!

Thrips, spider mites, scale, mealy bugs. They're all pests that go after your plant's sap. The damage they produce can look similar, but they are very different bugs. Let's focus on thrips. This is a pest that I have dealt with a lot, unfortunately. I can tell it's a thrip issue based on the color of my leaves. If they start to look coppery or like they've lost their color, it's thrips. Thrips can go dormant in the winter and come back out in the spring. Most likely you won't see the bug, but you will see the effects it has on your plant. Once they get older, then you will see white or brown specks crawling all over your plant. Not to be confused with spider mites! With spider mites you will see webbing, with trips you will not. From my experience thrips are easy to handle by using insecticidal soap or if you prefer, by systematic granules. But watch out! If you are using systematic granules and it is a spider mite issue, it will only worsen them. My tips for getting rid of thrips is to isolate your plant, wash it thoroughly and then spray it down with jackstead bug brew. I continue this until I no longer see thrips present or the new foliage coming out is clear and no longer is coppery or discolored.
