Various of protesters destroying European Union flags Orestiada β 24 January 2016 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Natasha Tsangarides, protester: "We've had enough. It's completely inhumane. European immigration policies are killing people and something needs to change. There is a land border, which is safer, and can prevent the drownings. So we call to open the border and enable a safe passage for people who are fleeing persecution and need a safe country to reside in." Kastanies β 24 January 2016 6. Protesters chanting, UPSOUND (Greek) "Tear down the fence, open the borders" Orestiada β 24 January 2016 7. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Loukas Theotokatos, protester: "If there is not a more normal, legal way for people to cross, they will continue to drown in the sea. The issue with the fence is abhorrent, unacceptable and racist, and it must stop because every day that the fence remains, more and more people drown and die from the cold. We must absolutely stop this." Kastanies β 24 January 2016 8. Wide of protest 9. Various of protesters holding banner reading (Greek/English) "(Let) Refugees In, Nazis out. Open the Borders. Out with Frontex (European Union's border agency)." 10. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Petros Constantinou, protest organiser: "These borders must open. For us, refugees are welcome and the European Union - along with (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel, (French President Francois) Hollande, (British Prime Minister David) Cameron, along with (Greek Prime Minister Alexis) Tsipras and (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan - cannot be sending refugees to the bottom of the sea. We are pursuing their right to passage through open borders. They are all welcome. The bombings must stop. Racism and Islamophobia must stop in Europe and we must push forward for a better society." 11. Various of protesters holding banner and chanting slogans at crossing point near Turkish border 12. Wide of border crossing with Turkey STORYLINE: Police in northern Greece on Sunday blocked protesters from reaching a border post on the Greek-Turkish frontier. Riot police set up a blockade at the border village of Kastanies, where several hundred protesters burned a European Union flag and chanted "open the borders". The protesters from Athens and elsewhere in Greece are demonstrating for a second day in the border region, in the wake of more deadly migrant boat sinkings in the eastern Aegean Sea. They are demanding that Greece ease transit restrictions at the border, where access is blocked by a 10.5-kilometre (six-and-half mile) fence. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
