So we were caught by the incoming tide exploring Motukaraka island, did we make it back to dry land before it became too deep?... Motukaraka island is situated on New Zealand's North island, just about 500m off the coast of Beachlands. The island is accessible during low-tide when a shell bank opens up. It's a 5.7-hectare uninhabited island and is about 15m high, you can easily walk around it, just take good care as it's extremely slippery on the exposed sandstone rock. You can start the walk from either Sunkist bay or from the beach access at the end of Puriri road, although the walk did seem easier to do from Puriri road, we started from Sunkist bay. The walk to the island from Sunkist bay is about 1.8km and about 1.1km from the Puriri road access, the walk around the island is about 1km. There is a staircase giving you access to the top of the island, there really is not much to see up there, a fire destroyed all the original plant life in 1965, the loss of the mature plants and trees in the fire has facilitated the growth of weeds. Although we saw a few foot paths, it's extremely overgrown and quite difficult to navigate your way through with branches scratching you from all sides. I will admit that I was a bit disappointed thinking I would find great views from up there, but the trees and plants grow till right up the edge, obscuring the views. The walk to the island is still scenic though, just plan to start about an hour before low tide, this will give you ample time to walk around and explore, starting later will cause you to get wet on the way back as we soon found out, the tide comes back in sooner than you might think... Thinking we still have enough time before the tide comes in, we set out to explore the top of the island. Coming back down, we realized... the tide came in! It was a race to wade through the water before it gets too deep and still try to keep the camera gear dry, did we make it?
