During the mid-19th century in China, a series of revoltsagainst the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) raged, devastating the landscape and claiming millions of lives. The Nian Rebellion (1851-1869) in the east and north of China had ties to a Buddhist sect, while the Taiping Rebellion in the south was led by a man who claimed to be the recipient of divine revelations. Hong Xiuquan (b. 1814), a schoolteacher from a small village in the Guangzhou province, led the Taiping Rebellion against the Qing Dynasty, nearly toppling the government and establishing himself as ruler. In the context of economic strife and religious fervor, Xiuquan blended public need and radical spiritualityinto an appealing movement for change. Chinese commoners flocked to support Xiuquan, and once heestablished his Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the country descended into civil strifethat altered China's path in immeasurable ways. 0:00 - Intro 0:00:08 - Xiuquan's SonWas Supposed To Continue His Father's Efforts 0:00:23 - Taiping Fighters Had Access To Gunpowder But Didn't Always Want It 0:00:38 - Infighting Severely Weakened The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom 0:00:52 - The Rebellion's Head Political And Military Leader Yang Xiuqing Tried To Usurp Power 0:02:08 - The Taiping Rebellion And Xiuquan's Hakka Heritage Appealed To Women 0:03:24 - Xiuquan's First Followers Were Members Of His Family And His Neighbors 0:03:39 - Western Diplomats And Missionaries Almost Recognized Xiuquan As An Independent Emperor 0:03:58 - Xiuquan Attracted Millions Of Peasants To His Religious Rebellion, But It May Have Been Because They Were Promised Land 0:04:20 - His Heavenly Kingdom Captured The City Of Nanjing And Established It As A Rival Capital To Beijing 0:04:39 - Xiuquan Converted To Christianity Because He Failed His Exams To Become A Bureaucrat 0:04:57 - Xiuquan Began His Revolt Because He Thought He Was The Brother Of Jesus Sent To Earth To Dispel Demons ➊▶️ MUSIC BY: https://bit.ly/DreamHeaven ➋About Toplaza We work for you!
