What Is the Daily Life of a PhD Scholar Like? | JNU PhD Journey Have you ever wondered what a PhD scholar’s life looks like? How much do they study? Do they really read all those books in the library, or do they just sit there untouched? In this video, I take you through a day in my life as a PhD scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). My name is Sandeep, and I am in my sixth year of PhD at the Centre for Political Studies, JNU. Before this, I completed an MPhil (2 years), a Master’s (2 years), and a Bachelor’s (3 years)—a long academic journey that has shaped my perspective on research, knowledge, and student life. My Daily Routine as a PhD Scholar My schedule is quite structured, but like most JNU students, I have adapted my own style of working: 7:00 AM – Wake up and get ready for the day. 8:00-9:30 AM – Breakfast at the hostel mess. 9:30-10:00 AM – A morning walk to plan the day ahead. 10:00 AM – Head to the Coffee House, grab a coffee, and start planning my reading list. 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM – First reading session (usually new books, articles, or concepts). 2:00 PM – Lunch break. 3:00 - 6:00 PM – Second study session (focused reading, note-making, and critical analysis). 6:00 - 7:00 PM – Break, casual discussions, or sometimes a power nap. 7:00 - 9:00 PM – Writing session (converting research into written content). 9:00 PM – Dinner and relaxing with friends, watching matches, or engaging in debates. 11:00 PM - 12:00 AM – Wrapping up the day and heading to bed. What Makes JNU Special? At JNU, discussions are not just about studies—they cover everything from politics, philosophy, cinema, and society to casual topics like relationships and everyday life. A simple evening in a hostel room can turn into a deep debate about beauty standards, social structures, or political ideologies. JNU is often perceived as a place of intense discussions, but life here is not just about serious debates. We celebrate birthdays, watch matches, order food, and enjoy life like anyone else. The difference? Our conversations often include references to books, theories, and academic insights. The Reality of a PhD Many people think PhD scholars just study all day, but research is more than that. It involves: Finding knowledge gaps in existing literature. Connecting theories to real-world scenarios. Writing and publishing papers. Engaging in intellectual discussions that shape society. Most importantly, research builds the foundation of knowledge. The history you read, the movies based on historical events, the policies that shape nations—all of these originate from researchers' work. The Importance of Research in Society Many people question the relevance of PhDs and research. But think about it: Why do we respect scientists? Because their research gives us technological advancements. Why do we trust historians? Because they document facts that shape our understanding of the past. Why do we study political science? Because it helps us understand governance, policies, and human rights. Research impacts every aspect of life. Even the speeches of political leaders are often written by scholars working behind the scenes. Why Should You Respect Research? In developed countries, research is given high respect, and governments invest heavily in scholars. In India, we need to recognize the value of intellectual work. The next time you hear someone dismiss research as "useless," remember—every fact you rely on, every invention you use, and every book you read exists because of researchers. Conclusion A PhD journey is not just about reading books—it’s about questioning, exploring, debating, and contributing to society.
