Windsurfing. Picture a big surfboard with a sail attached. I attended Mistral School to learn. The course lasted all day and as twilight came, we paddled out for our final exam to earn our Certification. It was calm and the illumination of the Beasley Point Power Plant cast a glow in the water. I was attracted to that glow – maybe like a moth to a flame. I paddled toward it with the intention of riding the bay breeze back to the beach and graduation. I pivoted toward shore then realized I was inching backwards. Then faster. The wind had quit and so I could only paddle in an attempt to overcome the pull. I was being pulled toward the cooling intake of the power plant! Swallowed pride. Yelled for help. A classmate jumped on the rescue jet ski and threw me a line which I tied to the mast. I was towed to the beach where I was awarded my Mistral Certification. Probably out of pity. Lyrics [Intro] Well I woke up this mornin', sun was climbin' high, Pack my gear and board it, thought I'd touch the sky. Slip into the waves, sail up in the air, Learnin’ at the Mistral School, felt that ocean air. [Verse 1] All day I trained hard, felt the breeze on my face, Twilight came a-callin’, I was ready for the race. Paddled out in silence, with a glow before my eyes, Beasley Point Power Plant, sparkled like a prize. [Chorus] Oh, I was drawn to that light, like a moth to the flame, Gonna ride that bay breeze, learned it for the fame. But the wind, it slipped away, and I felt the pull, Inch by inch I drifted, lost my footing in the lull. [Verse 2] I pivoted toward shore, thought I’d glide with grace, But I was inchin’ backward, lost in darkened space. The power plant was callin’, like a siren's tune, Oh the water felt so heavy, under a silver moon. [Chorus] Oh, I was drawn to that light, like a moth to the flame, Gonna ride that bay breeze, learned it for the fame. But the wind, it slipped away, and I felt the pull, Inch by inch I drifted, lost my footing in the lull. [Bridge] Swallowed pride, I hollered, could someone come around? Fingers crossed I’d find salvation, driftin’ out so far. A classmate on a jet ski, brought me back to shore, Tied that line to the mast, oh but I wanted more. [Verse 3] Towed to solid ground, my heart was poundin' strong, Terrified but grateful, now I know I belong. At the beach they cheered me, held my cert up high, Probably out of pity, but I’ll never say goodbye. [Outro] Mistral waves still callin’, wind beneath my wings, I’ll return to chase the tide, feel the thrill it brings. Each ride is a lesson, in the dance of sea and sky, In the blues of windsurfing, we’ll learn to touch the high.
