Primitive "Bow and Drill" friction fire explained and demonstrated in 3minutes. I demonstrate this live in person at the Hunter's Education Course in Southaven, Mississippi every year. I can also come out and teach this to different gatherings and Boy Scout meetings. Let's keep the caveman skills alive for future generations. Fire Board and Drill Wood: Use dry,(not green), Cedar, Cypress, or Willow are my favorites to use. Needs to be soft enough to make a mark with your fingernail in it. Stay away from limbs that you find on the ground because they have likely soaked up water from the ground. Find limbs that are dead still hanging in the tree. Tinder: Cypress and Cedar bark are excellent for using as a tinder bundle. Just crush it up really good, until it looks light and fluffy. It needs to be able to catch a spark easily. Jute twine works great, if you have it. Bearing Block: It can be anything. Sea shell, metal bottle cap, green hard wood, etc. Use a green leaf, candle wax, soap, anything to help with lubrication. String: It can be anything. A twisted handmade vine rope, SHOE LACE, 550 Para-cord, animal gut, etc. DON'T EXPECT TO GET LUCKY ON YOUR FIRST TRY!!! This takes a lot of practice. This is very similar to learning how ride a bike for the first time. Once you've learn it, and learn it well, you will become great! Just don't give up. Take several breaks. Try, and try again. Humidity and wet wood can make it really hard to start a friction fire, but it can be done. It will just take a whole lot more effort. You've been given some direction, now it's your turn to pass on these fading techniques on to future generations. This is great Father and Son Bonding time in the backyard! 1min.
