Opera Madama Butterfly Puccini Madama Butterfly is a tragic opera by Giacomo Puccini, set in Nagasaki, Japan, where a young geisha, Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly), marries an American naval officer, Pinkerton, only to be abandoned shortly after, leading to her tragic fate. Act I: Pinkerton, a U.S. Navy lieutenant, arrives in Nagasaki and, with the help of a marriage broker named Goro, rents a house and arranges to marry Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly), a young geisha. Butterfly, a 15-year-old, is captivated by Pinkerton and eagerly anticipates their marriage, even converting to Christianity to please him. The wedding ceremony takes place, but Butterfly's uncle, a Bonze (Buddhist priest), arrives and denounces her for betraying her ancestors, leading to her family's rejection. Pinkerton and Butterfly sing a love duet and prepare to spend their first night together. Act II: Three years pass, and Butterfly, now a mother, remains in Nagasaki, faithfully waiting for Pinkerton's return, while raising their son, Sorrow. Suzuki, Butterfly's maid, tries to convince her to move on, but Butterfly remains hopeful. The American consul, Sharpless, arrives with a letter from Pinkerton, who now has an American wife, Kate. Butterfly, heartbroken, refuses to give up her son and refuses to believe that Pinkerton has abandoned her. Pinkerton and his American wife, Kate, arrive, and Butterfly, realizing the truth, chooses to end her life rather than let her son be taken away. Act III: Butterfly, heartbroken and realizing Pinkerton's betrayal, prepares to end her life. She bids farewell to her son, Sorrow, and then commits suicide with her father's dagger. Pinkerton and Sharpless rush in, witnessing Butterfly's death and the consequences of his actions.
