For example, in larger labs, PIs spend less time per project and less time mentoring trainees. Also, larger, fewer labs result in reduced diversity of research and fewer chances for discoveries. Lorsch suggests we renew our focus on efficiency and invest in a “broad and diverse portfolio” of research. As Director of NIGMS, he is implementing a pilot program with this objective in mind, called the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA). Speaker Biography: Jon Lorsch is the Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at the National Institutes of Health. As Director, he leads the execution of NIGMS’s mission to promote advances in scientific research and biomedical workforce training. Lorsch came to NIGMS from Johns Hopkins University, where he was a professor in the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry for 14 years. His research, which is continuing at the NIH, is focused on studying the molecular mechanisms of protein translation. Lorsch received a BA in chemistry from Swarthmore College and a PhD in biochemistry from Harvard University, where he worked in the laboratory of Jack Szostak.
