James's PRS SE DTG in for a set up and a look at the electrics as he reported an intermittent fault. The task was a small reduction in the playing action; precision fret levelling and a look at the electrics. I was leaving the original nut in place and giving the guitar a clean up after levelling and fitting and intonating new strings. The switching 'problem' turned out to be the result of reversed neck and bridge volume pots - which I have since discovered is a David Grissom 'signature' thing. Unfortunately that's information I didn't have - and I'm guessing nor did James exactly because it made him think that either the switch or the pots were faulty. I try to explain how this occurs in the video - it's bizarrely difficult to describe something so simple. Of course, I'm trying to make sense of it without knowing about the 'Grissom' quirk - but the point is the same i.e. if you reverse them and a player isn't expecting it / doesn't know the signature modification, then it's easy to perceive that something's wrong as I described. And you can watch in real time me totally fooling myself that I'd swapped the pots...when in fact I hadn't :D It's even funnier given that it turns out that a) I read the wiring diagram as confirming my expectation of a normal layout (there's confirmation bias in real-time for you!) and b) because my failure to switch them the first time actually left them the way that the guitar gods intended. No doubt I'll get the usual "you don't even know that David Grissom has his pots reversed!" flaming. In reality I don't even know who David Grissom is so get your teeth into that. I'll bet there are lots of guitarists you people don't know about too. :D When all's said & done, James didn't seem to want it the Grissom way round so I'm guessing that he didn't buy the guitar for that 'feature'... It's simple enough to switch around if required of course. Just goes to show that small changes cause large pains in the *ss!
