(9 Apr 1996) English/Nat Have an extra seven (m) million dollars lying around and don't know what to buy? Christie's in New York has the answer. Precious jewels, diamonds and emeralds - many worth more than five (m) million U-S dollars - are scheduled to go on the block. Christie's held a sneak preview on Monday of the auction - scheduled for 15 and 16 April. These diamonds once graced the wife of Nathan Cummings, founder of Consolidated Foods Corporation, one of the U-S's biggest food suppliers, now known as Sara Lee. The head of Christie's jewelry department says the appeal of glittery stones is universal. SOUNDBITE: "The range of clients can various enormously, whether they be from the Middle East, whether they be from the Pacific Rim, whether they be from within America or Europe. It really is the most fascinating melting pot." SUPER CAPTION: Simon Teakle, Head of Christie's Jewelry There are diamonds, emeralds and rubies in earrings, necklaces and pendants up for grabs. Teakle says that the materialistic 1980s were the golden age for jewelry traders. But while the market is not what it used to be, buyers still want quality. SOUNDBITE: "Whilst it is still a long way from the heady days of the 1980s, there is a confidence in the market, it's hungry and it wants to see the fine quality pieces back." SUPER CAPTION: Simon Teakle, Head of Christie's Jewelry These diamond drop earrings have an asking price of approximately one-and-a-half (m) million dollars. Even those with gaudier tastes will find something to wear. The Magnificent Jewels collection has already been on a world tour - mostly to the nouveau-riche upstart markets on the Pacific Rim. But those that want to own - and not just look - will have to buy a ticket to the Big Apple this time.
