How to Rig a Weedless Tube Jig (Step-by-Step) What You’ll Need: • A soft plastic tube bait (hollow body) • An internal tube jig hook with a 60- to 90-degree bend (specially designed for this rig) • A pair of scissors or a tube bait reamer (optional, for prepping the bait) Step 1: Choose the Right Hook and Tube • Use a weedless tube jig head with a 60° or 90° bend. These are made to hide the hook inside the tube for a natural look and weedless performance. • Match the size of your jig to the size of your tube. Common tube sizes range from 3.5” to 4”. Step 2: Prep the Tube (Optional) • Some anglers like to snip a small slit or widen the hollow cavity at the head of the tube. This makes inserting the jig easier, especially with thicker plastic tubes. Step 3: Insert the Jig Head • Hold the tube upside down so the tentacles face downward. • Push the hook point up through the hollow core of the tube, entering from the bottom (tentacle side) and exiting out the head of the tube. Step 4: Rotate the Hook • Once the hook eye and head of the jig are all the way inside the tube, rotate the jig head so the hook shank now lies along the inside wall of the tube. • The hook bend should now face the back of the tube, resting inside the body but ready to pop out on a hookset. Step 5: Skin Hook for Weedless Presentation • Carefully push the hook point out the side of the tube, about halfway back on the body. Then tuck just the tip back in slightly (skin hook it) to keep it weedless. Step 6: Rigging Complete – Ready to Fish • The tube should look natural, with no metal exposed (except the hook point barely skin hooked). You’re now ready to fish through grass, rock, and cover with confidence. Bonus Tip: This rig shines when targeting smallmouth or largemouth bass, especially around sparse vegetation, rock piles, and docks.
