You can do a lot of your work on applications to jobs and schools last minute but reference letters are not one of those things. Reference letters take some time to obtain, because they have to be written by someone else. Many applications explicitly require reference letters from Professors of your college or university program, and even if they don't, often with the lack of work experience that students have, Professors may be the best source of a professional reference letter. The difficulty however, is that unlike a supervisor at your work from whom you would request a reference letter, a Professor doesn't necessarily have the day-to-day interaction with you as a student. And we know that can all that be written in a reference letter is based on what the writer knows about you in their own experience with you. So how does one then get a reference letter from a Professor? In this video I outline the strategies you should think about employ when you know you will require reference letters from a Professor. The key to remember is that the reference letter is simply a byproduct of the academic and professional relationship you have cultivated with a Professor, and should not be the end goal itself.
