Joseph Albano looks back on his nearly 70-year legendary career as founder of ballet companies, choreographer, dance teacher and ballet dancer and has advice to make the world a better place. The now - 87-year-old Albano, who maintains a dance studio off Farmington Avenue in Hartford's West End, has an unfinished memoir. He didn't want to talk about any "crappy documents". The New London, CT, native refused to discuss his years at Trinity College, Hartford, CT from 1956 to 1960, the creation of the Hartford Ballet Company in the early 1960s, the founding of his own Albano Ballet Company in the 1970s, or even his "Albano Nutcracker," which had been famous for decades and attracted a loyal audience. Instead, Albano said his yet-to-be-titled book, is about living - and surviving - in a "democratic communist country," a view he said, that would require 250 interviews. "We need more intelligent people who have a lifestyle biography, not only having had the privilege of being in America with its diversity, but having the European background to understand what the old is, in respect to the new, and vice-versa," he said. Albano was being interviewed in his studio where he still teaches dance and hold his annual auction fundraiser. This is the first interview.
