“EMERALD EXPRESS” Landing craft washed ashore Crooked Island, Bahamas Landing craft Emerald Express (494 gt, built 2001) was the lucky survivor of Hurricane "Joaquin". The hurricane's 135 mph winds pushed the vessel inland on a storm surge so deep that she passed over reefs and mangroves without trouble. The storm left her at the edge of Horse Pond, Crooked Island, in a mangrove swamp. T&T Salvage was awarded the contract and dispatched personnel and equipment to support the stranded vessel and her crew with the salvage and refloating. The remote location of the casualty created numerous obstacles including the lodging and daily livelihood of the salvage team who dispatched mobile road vehicle (RV) units and numerous excavators and other equipment to support the operations. The uninhabited island was accessed only by the sistership landing craft and via a remote airstrip where private planes could deliver emergency resources. The efforts of the T&T Salvage personnel paid out after a month of operations by widening six miles of roadway to haul the stranded vessel. The Emerald Express was lifted onto heavy inflatable roller tubes and rolled over the intervening distance to an estuary, with towing provided by two large Caterpillar bulldozers. She was then refloated and carefully navigated the remaining 15 miles back out to sea. The Emerald Express was redelivered back to her owners on December 8 2015 and arrived at her base at Port Everglades on December 14.
