Brighter Minds - Inspire & Motivate : “Why does anything exist the way it does?” aristotle tried to pin down what it is that persists in a thing that gives it its continuity as a single thing, even while its properties and attributes change. for example, a leaf starts as a bud , grows and turns green , and then withers and dies , but it remains throughout the process the same leaf. he also asked what are the fundamental properties of a thing which give it its identity as a particular thing , and without which it would cease to be the same thing. he saw these two questions as entwined. material cause . the material cause is the physical matter an object is made of. it answers the question , what is it made of ? for example, the material cause , for a wooden table , is the wood . formal cause. formal cause is the shape , design , pattern and structure of a thing. it's what makes a thing what it is , and not something else. it answers the question , what is its form or shape? for example, a statue's design , or the DNA of a living being. efficient cause. the efficient cause is who, or what brings a thing into existence. it is the primary source of the change or motion. meaning , the agent or process that brings something into being. efficient cause answers the question , how was it made? or who made it? for example , for a bronze statue , the efficient cause is the sculptor who molds the bronze. for a plant, the efficient cause is the seed from which it grows. final cause. finally , the final cause is the purpose , goal or end of a thing. it is the reason for which something exists . it answers the question , what is its purpose? or what is it for? for example , the final cause might be to honor a historical figure , or to serve as a piece of art. for a seed , its final cause is to become a mature plant. to fully understand something , aristotle urges us to search for all these 4 causes. they are not about a chain of events , but rather different ways of explaning the nature of an object. if you enjoyed this breakdown of aristotle , check out my other philosophy videos. thank you . #aristotle #theory #reality #philosophy
