3D Modeling On the PC was making massive inroads during the late 90's. The Pentium-based PC were only getting faster, and now with really high-resolution displays and the arrival of more powerful display adapters, Windows was only become even more capable of handling 3D modeling applications. Up until this time, most 3D modeling was being done on either SGI workstations or Commodore Amiga's. The Amiga in particular caught the hearts and minds of graphics artist as the platform that had the tools for 3D Modeling. The Commodore Amiga represented the arrival of 3D modeling on a commodity platform (of course, one needed a really high-rend Amiga to accomplish such task). Such, Lightwave 3D, developed by NewTek and released alongside the Video Toaster, a hardware device that allowed for the video editing and production of broadcast-grade video on commodity hardware; became the 3D modeler of choice for Amiga users. Lightwave 3D was used alongside the Video Toaster to produce CG for TV programming. However, for NewTek, there was a problem. By the middle 90's, the Amiga was a dying platform. Corporate incompetence at the hands of a post-Tramiel Commodore had left the Amiga platform in a doomed state. Matters made worse by the arrival of the budget Wintel PC's that started to take the industry by storm with the PC price war, which didn't help Commodore at all. Lightwave would be relegated to the dust bin of history unless it found a way off the Amiga platform. Lightwave was ported to both MacOS and Windows NT, where it quickly found a new audience of die-hard and dedicated users that would go off and create those awesome CG scenes for various projects. Now, 3D modelers are very complex applications that demand stable environments. The SGI workstations for example ran a customize proprietary UNIX system. However, the developers wanted to bring Lightwave to a bigger audience, so Windows would be the focus of the next port. With Windows NT and Win95 (which incorporated many elements of the WinNT API), Lightwave for Windows would get that stable environment now. However, between the two, Windows NT offered a far more stable platform for 3D modeling applications. It's now time to create some awesome scenes! VMware Player 16 is virtualizing a x86 Workstation with a single-core processor (AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core host running at 3.8HGz), 64MB's of RAM, and a VESA 1.2 Compatible display adapter. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 1024 by 768, 32-bit depth. A Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 is installed for audio support while an AMD PCnet-FAST III NIC is installed for networking support. Windows NT 4.0 Workstation is installed along with Service Pack 6.
