(29 Aug 1995) English/Nat The normally sedate OJ Simpson trial in Los Angeles was shaken Tuesday after racially offensive tapes of one of the police officers involved in the investigation were played in court. The notorious "Fuhrman tapes" lived up to their billing. Without the jury present, a stunned audience listened and heard the voice of Detective Mark Fuhrman as he made racist comments, knowing he was being recorded. A US screenwriter was summoned to Los Angeles superior court Tuesday as OJ Simpson's defence played tapes made by Laura Hart McKinney as she interviewed Detective Mark Fuhrman-the officer who found a bloody glove on Simpson's property the day after his ex-wife and her friend were murdered. The defence-through the graphic tapes-hopes to portray Fuhrman as a rogue and racist cop who planted evidence on Simpson's property. McKinney describes her first encounter with Fuhrman. SOUNDBITE: "I was sitting in a cafe in Westwood late one morning working on my lap top computer and officer Fuhrman who was not dressed in uniform so a man came up and asked me about my laptop." SUPERCAPTION: Laura Hart McKinney, Witness. McKinney said during her meetings with Fuhrman he was always vivid and eager to speak out against racial groups and women. SOUNDBITE: "Cause they to want to join a group like that and the kinds of things they would do to stonewall or embarrass women or humiliate women." SUPERCAPTION: Laura Hart-McKinney, Witness. The defence is trying to win permission to play the tapes in front of the jury because Fuhrman told them back in March he never used the word "Nigger." McKinney begged to differ. SOUNDBITE: "In these transcripts was the word in the interviews that were taped, was the word nigger ever used?" McKinney: "Yes." SUPERCAPTION: Gerald Uelmen, Defence Attorney Laura Hart McKinney, Witness. The prosecution fought hard to keep the court from playing the tapes. Ito didn't oblige and the defence cited 41 different instances in which Fuhrman degraded Blacks, Mexicans and women-bragging to McKinney about his methods as a Los Angeles Police Officer. SOUNDBITE: "Do you know why we stopped the choke? Because a bunch of niggers have a bunch of these organizations in the south end and because all niggers have been choked out and killed 12 in 10 years. Really extraordinary isn't it?" SUPERCAPTION: Mark Fuhrman, Detective. SOUNDBITE: "They had a bunch of niggers up there-two guys they are about 5-6 they got punched right in the face." SUPERCAPTION: Mark Fuhrman, Detective. SOUNDBITE: "I don't give a fuck if she is a female she's a policeman in this city and don't you ever fight or fuck around with a police officer you do what you're told you understand nigger?" SUPERCAPTION: Mark Fuhrman, Detective. The prosecution just listened as the embarrassing tapes were played. McKinney said she was also offended by Fuhrman and his rhetoric. SOUNDBITE: "Did you find any of the comments that officer Fuhrman was making in the course of your interviews offensive?" Ito: "Go ahead." McKinney: "I heard what happened with the question but I didn't hear what happened with the court." Ito: "You can answer the question." McKinney: "Yes" SUPERCAPTION: Laura Hart-McKinney, Witness. SOUNDBITE: "Smell that scent." McKinney: "Oh yeah." Fuhrman: "Leave that whole station there it's got the smell of niggers that have been beaten and killed in there for years." SUPERCAPTION: Mark Fuhrman, Detective SOUNDBITE: McKinney:"The part of it is you're not-we don't want to murder people." Fuhrman: "Sure we do." Fuhrman: "We love to."
