When people hear the term God of War these days, most of them immediately think of Kratos, but... the actual god of war in Greek Mythology is Ares. Unfortunately though, being the God of War isn't exactly the most desirable job in Greek Mythology: Everybody hated Ares — most of all Ares' own father Zeus and his sister Athena. Ares' constant desire and need for warfare and the suffering it causes saw him easily be the most disliked god in Ancient Greece, both among humans and gods. There was no real Ares worship back in the day, and, In fact, Ares seems to be more popular now than he ever was back in the day, in part due to the God of War games, but also due to the Romans highly worshipping Ares — though under a different name: Mars. Many cultures that followed Ancient Greece, held warfare, power and violence in much higher regard, and thus worshipping a god such as Ares, who is all about those "qualities", is more on par with the times. Of course, there is more to Ares than just being hated, and that's what we're going to explore in today's episode. Episode 5 Of Keeping Up With The Greek Gods — Everybody Hates Ares Subscribe For New Episodes Every Saturday & Wednesday Notes: Mythology is a very tough puzzle to piece together, because all of these stories are thousands of years old. With Greek Mythology, we are lucky because the Athenians prided themselves on documenting everything, but because of their thirst for knowledge and education, they also produced many great storytellers, and with a lot of storytelling comes a lot of embellishing and regional differences, so, over time, we ended up with a lot of variety and room for interpretation when it comes to Hades, also because the Romans gave him a whole new identity as Mars. For the sake of this video — and all my videos — I try to streamline all of these tales and versions as much as possible and leave out some details that might make the videos less fun. So... is this accurate and well researched? Absolutely. Is this the only interpretation or way of telling you about the God of War Ares? No, this is my way to tell the story. Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel: I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it — I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 6 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon — the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though — you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc. If you choose to become a Patron — thank you. I do not take it for granted. / briefed Sources: A lot of people ask me about my sources, and… to be honest, they are a mixed bag. One major source is my lifelong interest in storytelling and mythology. Another is the beautiful endless library that is the internet, and, third, I read the occasional book from time to time, which I’m happy to recommend to you, but also… I’m planning to write my own book on mythology, so, in due time it will be…: Source?
