An elegant mix of modern and medieval, Granada is a wonderful place. The old district of Albaicín sits just above the city centre. It takes a little turn off the main road to find yourself in a maze of cobbled streets where time seems to have stood still for centuries. Like many other cities in Andalucia, Granada has also seen many transformations. Even during the eight centuries of the Islamic Empire, this place saw many dynasties and cultural trends. There are some lovely viewpoints in Albaicin, including the famous spot at San Nicolas, which is popular with both tourists and musicians. While the Alhambra is always the main attraction, you can also catch some stunning views of Granada and the surrounding areas from the two San Miguel viewpoints. One tip - this old city is built like a maze, with some reasonably steep paths; you don’t want to end up in the wrong place when exploring the local scene. Either use your phone or a good-quality map of the area. But if you are the kind who likes to follow their nose, this place will provide you with a lot of adventure. There’s a circular walk around Alhambra which passes by Carmen de los Martires, which is definitely worth a visit. And please take some treats for the peacocks who like to greet the visitors with a splendid display of colours and motion. Having missed a turn on this walk, we found ourselves on a hill with no obvious way to return to the old town. Thankfully, they had a little bridge over the River Darro, which reconnected us to the main walking route. The view of the old wall was a befitting treat from taking this ‘alternative’ trail. #spain #granada #alhambra #albaicin #historicspain
