Video by Adam / RED HOOK BROOKLYN - On September 19, 2025, at approximately 11:47 PM, a five-alarm fire erupted in a converted warehouse on Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, rapidly spreading to four adjacent buildings, destroying artist studios filled with paintings, sculptures, and other creative works. The blaze, battled by over 200 FDNY firefighters, was fueled by flammable materials like turpentine and wood, with the cause still under investigation. No fatalities were reported, but several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation, and numerous artists lost their livelihoods due to uninsured or underinsured studios. The tightly packed warehouses and aging infrastructure complicated containment efforts, leaving five buildings gutted by dawn. The Red Hook artist community, known for its vibrant, bohemian spirit, faced significant losses but began organizing recovery efforts through local donations and crowdfunding.
