Importing Rare Aroids - The 7,000 Mile Journey

In this video we will follow a typical journey that plants make from the stunning island of Java here to the UK. Sourcing Your Plants: It all starts with the sourcing of the rare aroids we treasure and finding reputable nurseries out in Indonesia. Next is plant selection and making sure we know exactly what plants we are purchasing and not just trusting stock images. When choosing the number of plants to import, a big consideration is how many to include in an order. The cost of shipping remains the same whether you purchase one small to medium plant or 12. It becomes very expensive when you add typical shipping costs of $150 to just a couple of plants and can often diminish any savings you may be making. On the other hand, if you make a large purchase to make the most of shipping fees, you also increase the risk if the shipment gets delayed in transit or runs into issues with customs and DEFRA. Price of Plants: Nurseries will often have a fixed price if you are purchasing just a few plants. If you intend to place a large order, you may be offered a wholesale price. Negotiations, can often be a lengthy process and making counter offers are normal practice in this part of the world. There has been a massive boom in growing rare aroids throughout Indonesia to supply the huge demand in the USA and European market and this has led to massively inflated prices. Many Indonesians are now taking full advantage of the local climate which is very similar to the rainforests of Ecuador and Colombia and the amount of small community growers are on the rise. Some of these community growers will supply the large nurseries to help meet the ever increasing demand for rare aroids and some will attempt to sell direct via social media groups. The price of plants will normally be higher from an established nursery but less risky than dealing with an individual that is 7,000 miles away with little chance of recouping your money if they disappear. Preparing For Shipping: Once you have selected your plants, they will undergo a rigorous root cleansing process to remove all the soil and any pests. All plants have to be shipped bare root. The seller will need to apply for a phytosanitary certificate and inspections will take place to ensure that the plants are pest free before being cleared for export. Most plants are then wrapped in tissue and cling film to help retain moisture to the roots during transit. The process used during packaging will have a big bearing on the condition of the plants when they arrive. The 7,000 Mile Journey. Most sellers use a reputable shipping company like DHL and you should be wary of any cheap shipping offers as a quick transit is vital. In most cases your plants journey will be in six stages. 1. Transit to the local DHL offices and delivery to Bogor airport.2. Bogor to either Hong Kong or Singapore. 3. Hong Kong to Leipzig (DHL European hub) 4. Leipzig to DHL East Midlands processing facility.5. East Midlands to your nearest local DHL depot. 6. Local depot to your final destination. Customs and DEFRA: This part of the journey is the most unpredictable as your plants will be at the mercy of customs and DEFRA. At the moment inspections only take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and this will often lead to delays. First, the documentation will be checked and if the phyto is. missing or incorrect, your plants will not be granted entry into the UK. There will also be a physical inspection of your plants to ensure they adhere to plant health regulations. Assuming all is in order, your plants will be cleared for dispatch. Excitement and Trepidation! So, the box has arrived and you will be full of excitement but also have a degree of trepidation as to how your plants have coped with the 7,000 mile journey and being a dark box for a lengthy time. In the next video, we will open the box and see what we have received. On average, it's usual to have 5/10 in reasonable condition. They will have retained most of their leaves but may have cosmetic damage and some root loss. 4/10 will need rehab. They will have yellowing leaves, some rotting of the roots and will require an acclimation period of several weeks or even months before the roots start to regenerate and they produce their first 'UK' leaf. You can expect at least 1/10 to be mush with no leaves and no viable root system left. Conclusion: If you have not imported rare aroids from Indonesia before and are thinking about giving it a go, I hope that you find this video useful as a guide. Many people do import themselves or purchase direct from sites like Etsy and end up with stunning plants after a period of acclimation. Be aware of the risks and the price you pay and make a calculated decision before you place an order. Here at Ultimate Tropicals, our business service is to import rare aroids and ensure they are fully acclimated for the UK market for at least two months and have produced at least one 'UK" leaf before making them available.
