This roof leak more than likely could have been avoided if the shingles would have been installed properly with the nails in the right spots. We find a lot of roof leaks caused by nails not in the right spot which don't develop a leak right away, it takes a few years before the leaks occur. Unfortunately there is no simple correct fix, just putting some sealer over the nails or a piece of flashing and hoping for the best.
