Boveda have found that salt offers the best characteristics for maintaining relative humidity. Most other options provide one-way humidification that hovers between 85 and 95% relative humidity in their output. It's much less consistent than Boveda's precise release, and necessitates things like rotating cigars in and out of your humidor. One-way humidification gives you a rollercoaster of humidification that you have to check on and adjust frequently, every two weeks at best. With a properly seasoned humidor, a Boveda pack is essentially a set-and-forget solution. In a wood humidor, there's no additional fuss for three months, while in an airtight, it can last for 6-12 months. Meanwhile, Boveda packs have a two-way membrane. Pure water vapor can go out, but it can also go in. Therefore, a Boveda pack releases moisture until the relative humidity is high enough, at which point moisture instead reenters the pack. The salt inside Boveda packs is not ordinary table salt, but a specific natural salt that's tuned to a particular relative humidity level. Boveda 75% and 32% packs each use one type of salt, while other use two-salt blends. What this means for you is that, no matter what the ambient relative humidity is, your Boveda pack will work towards changing the RH to its specified level. Once the environment is at the pack's own RH level, it's at equilibrium and moisture doesn't go in or out. This prevents both spikes and dips in humidity common with one-way humidification. Boveda seeks to make humidification easy: put in one pack for every 25 cigars in container capacity, and when it's spent, replace it. It's also easy to tell when a pack is done, since it will be hard and stiff, with the salt inside fused into one piece.
