In this episode of The Solomon Atah Podcast, we are joined by Dr Myalezo Mato, a researcher in international relations, governance, and terrorism studies, to unpack how violence functions as a form of governance rather than simply a security threat. This episode offers a critical African perspective on terrorism, violent non state actors, and the limits of conventional security thinking. The conversation traces Dr Mato’s academic journey into terrorism studies and examines his research on South Africa’s counter terrorism architecture since 2001. We explore where state responses to terrorism and extremism have been effective, where they fall short, and how contemporary threats often emerge outside formal security frameworks. Drawing on his experience as a researcher working within government, Dr Mato reflects on the challenges of producing critical knowledge on violence, security, and policy from inside state institutions. The episode also highlights how grassroots organising and community development continue to shape Dr Mato’s approach to research and governance. We close by looking ahead to emerging questions on extremism, governance, and social change, and by challenging young scholars to rethink how political violence in Africa is studied, defined, and addressed. Key topics discussed: • Terrorism studies and violent non state actors in Africa • South Africa’s counter terrorism policy since 2001 • Violence, governance, and state power • Researching security from within government • Future directions for studying extremism in Africa This episode is essential viewing for students, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in African politics, security studies, terrorism research, and governance.
