The airplane is still going through certification with a new engine in the Lycoming IO-540. Pipistrel is also exploring selling the aircraft as an experimental kit. Pipistrel Panthera was first introduced 5 years ago. The initial specs on the airplane are: carry 4 adults, travel 1000 miles cruising over 200 mph. All while burning 10.5 gallons of fuel per hour. This was possible with the use of a smaller engine in the Lycoming IO-390. Except Lycoming would not approve the IO-390 to take in Mogas. Because of this, Pipistrel is forced to go back to the drawing board and explore a different engine choice. Now the production model and experimental model of the Panthera will be equipped with a Lycoming IO-540 engine. Also the Panthera will be available in hybrid powered and fully electric powered models.
