Hey Guys, This is the 2nd video in the 'History of Indian Architecture' series When we talk about central India and its architectural heritage, eminence of the Buddhist complex at Sanchi is felt significantly. Its history spanning across more than 2 millennials and contribution of various royal patrons makes it a complex of immense historic relevance and a UNESCO world heritage site. Thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and tourists from across the globe visit to see the stupas and other monuments built on the hill at Sanchi. It is situated at a distance of 9 Km south-west of the ancient town of Vidisha and 46 km from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The monuments of Sanchi are divided into two groups—one comprising the edifices situated on the hill-top and few on the western slope. The monuments are numbered from 1-51, first one being the great stupa of Gautam Buddha along with the Ashokan pillar and other important structures being Stupa No. 2, 3, Temple no. 17, 18, 40 and temple/Monastry 45. Layers of history associated with the sanchi complex make it a center of immense knowledge from the past. It narrates the development of the Buddhist religion, rise and fall of great empires, influences from the west on the Indian sub-continent, growth of artist guilds and finally the evolution of culture and hence architecture. Sanchi has been ground for extensive scholarly work for more than a century and still attracts researcher and history enthusiasts with great vigour. Next Time you visit the Buddhist monuments at Sanchi, I hope you will see them in new light and appreciate them for their invaluable contribution to Indian architecture and its development.
