We’ve been talking with community members, business leaders & workers about our Seven Valleys (Lithgow LGA) and the transition away from fossil fuel. The response is always the same: “Highly concerned”. Despite more than a century of contribution to Australia’s economic development, the voice of our region is not yet part of the national & state conversation about our future. This is not OK. Our Seven Valleys has been in skilled population and economic decline since the closure of several coal mines and the Wallerawang PowerStation. And what is bleedingly obvious is without drastic action, we are a bullet train headed for a dead end. Finding strength from unity, we decided to pull together our own conversation to share stories, hopes, insight, and experiences as a way to more proactively feel part of shaping our own future. We’ve been hearing from Mums, Dads, Grandparents, business owners, and young people, and the sense of pride in our history and potential for our future continues to shine through. As a diverse yet united group, the 3 big messages that continue to be reinforced are these: • We lack any kind of believable strategic plan that maps out a sustainable future for our region • We have a mindset issue in our community which results in opportunities passing us by • We’ve been distracted by red herrings and chasing rainbows and it’s slowing us down in a race against the clock (tourism is wonderful – but it’s not going to save us) So what's the opportunity? Here’s where we’ve gotten to so far: • We have a Power Station on the ground with hundreds of hectares of shovel-ready industrial land • We have a skilled industrial workforce who love this community and region • Our location and infrastructure (energy, rail, highways, optic fibre backbone), and unlimited water! • We have a community with tremendous pride in what makes us who we are. We are capable of being an example for Australia and the world (!) on how to transition an economy and fossil fuel-based community The need for transition is real and unfolding right before our eyes. If we want to secure intergenerational prosperity for our region we need to act with unity - URGENTLY. Let’s start with listening to each other. Really listening. Start here. Only 10 mins of raw community stories. Please keep the conversation alive – otherwise, everyone else will do the talking (or not) for us. #ACTNOWFOR7VALLEYS
