Newark firefighters battled a 2nd Alarm structure fire around 4:46 AM involving two occupied residential buildings at 17 Dover Street and 19 Dover Street in Newark, New Jersey. The main fire building at 17 Dover Street, a 3-story Type V wood-frame structure, was heavily involved when the first due companies arrived. Upon arrival, first due companies on the box transmitted the 2nd alarm immediately after finding heavy fire conditions throughout the main fire building along with exposure issues involving the adjacent structure at 19 Dover Street. Initial calls into dispatch reported fire with possible entrapment, prompting a rapid response from multiple engine and ladder companies. Engine 26, the first arriving engine company, stretched hand lines and initiated an aggressive interior attack in an attempt to knock down the fire and search for any possible victims. Fire conditions quickly deteriorated due to advanced fire involvement and collapse of the second floor, forcing crews to evacuate the interior of the main fire building while additional lines were stretched into the exposure building. As the fire intensified, a deck gun was placed into operation on the main fire building, while firefighters worked multiple hand lines to contain the fire and prevent further extension. Both structures eventually suffered roof collapses, and a collapse zone was established around the primary fire building while crews continued to operate. Firefighters made several aggressive pushes inside the exposure building, chasing fire that had extended above them through the roof. A total of 13 adults and 5 children were displaced from the two homes. Three adults and one child were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and all victims are reported to be in stable condition. Crews remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul operations and extinguishing hot spots. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Newark Arson Squad.
