Discover how the project "Advancing Legal Aid: Strengthening LACON’s Impact and Institutionalizing paralegal training" is redefining the justice landscape for vulnerable populations across Nigeria. Implemented by Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) with the generous support of the European Union and International IDEA under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC II) Programme, this initiative targets eight focal locations: Adamawa, Lagos, Kano, Anambra, Edo, Plateau, Abia, and the FCT. In this video, we explore three pillars of systemic change: 1. The Paralegal Revolution in Education Learn about the groundbreaking Network of Paralegal Training Institutions and the standardized 70/30 curriculum model now being integrated into eight pilot universities. Watch the "signature moment" at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), the first institution to officially sign the MOU, paving the way for a professional cadre of "Legal First Responders". 2. Strengthening LACON as a National "Clearing House" See how the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON) is transitioning from a solo provider to a strategic hub that coordinates, tracks, and refers legal aid cases through a unified network. We highlight the training of 394 beneficiaries, including 144 community paralegals, who are now equipped with skills in mediation and human rights to bridge the justice gap. 3. A 10-Year Vision for Justice (NLAS 2026–2035) Hear from stakeholders on the validation of the new National Legal Aid Strategy, which extends the reform window to a decade to ensure long-term sustainability. Witness the powerful shift in language as the system moves from labeling citizens as "indigent" to the more inclusive "persons who cannot afford legal services". Facing the Odds We also spotlight the resilience of legal aid officers in places like Edo, where staff have worked for five years without electricity, and Lagos, where lawyers handle over 1,000 cases a year despite massive resource gaps. This project is the first step toward a digital-first, accountable, and transparent justice system in Nigeria.
