The Armenian Bar Association, in collaboration with the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, is recording testimonies of Armenians who survived pogroms and other systematic violence in Soviet Azerbaijan between 1988 and 1991. Today, we are once again reminded of this dark history—in which the Armenian communities of Sumgait, Kirovabad, Baku, and other places were destroyed—in light of Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing of the Armenians of Artsakh in 2023. Our goal is to create an archive that empowers Armenians from Soviet Azerbaijan to tell their own stories. The archive will be stored with the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute in Yerevan, preserving survivors’ voices for generations to come.
