A conversation with Don Van Vliet a.k.a. Captain Beefheart (1941-2010). On January 30, 1991, in the wee hours of the morning (Danish time), I had a long and strange conversation with the painter Don Van Vliet on the phone from Copenhagen to the small town of Trinidad on the Pacific coast of Northern California. At that time, Don Van Vliet had long retired from his music career, and from his artistic identity of Captain Beefheart. But nevertheless I had a strange feeling of having a conversation that was not only long-distance and transatlantic, but also reaching into a far and distant world, a mythical place, maybe even another dimension. Many years later, in the summer of 2005, I traveled to Trinidad with my small video camcorder and recorded impressions from the land- and seascapes that Don Van Vliet might have been watching while talking to me in 1991. Back in Denmark I edited a condensed version of our 90 minute conversation and combined it with the new footage. In the small video notebook that resulted from this meeting of sound and images, you can hear Van Vliet talk about his work in music and painting, about being a captain without a boat, and about sightings of whales, surfers and deadheads. This turned out to be one of the last interviews Don Van Vliet gave in his life. A few yeas later, due to increasing health problems, he retired completely from public appearances.
