Battery Basics The three things to consider when you purchase an automotive battery are group size, cold cranking amps (CCA), and reserve capacity (RC). o Group size: the physical dimensions and terminal locations of the battery. o Cold Cranking Amps: the measure of a battery’s ability to start in cold temperatures. o Reserve Capacity: the best representation of a battery’s overall performance in all conditions. The group size of your replacement battery is essential for fit and function. The cold cranking amps and reserve capacity can be upgraded, but should never drop below manufacturer specifications. When CCA and RC are below manufacturer specifications, you can experience loss of power, a battery that dies before it should, and greater expense in the long run. The Two Basic Batteries Automotive batteries fall into two categories: Conventional and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM). These two types of batteries look similar on the outside, and inside, they both use metal plates that promote conductivity as well as electrolyte, which is a combination of sulfuric acid and water that flows freely around the plates. The difference in AGM batteries is that their plates are wrapped in absorbent glass mat material that keeps the electrolyte in more consistent contact with the plates. This technology improves the performance of AGM batteries by making them twenty times more vibration-resistant, spill-proof and faster-charging. They can also get up to twice the cycle life of conventional batteries and supply more power for electronics. Battery Recycling Remarkably, lead-acid batteries like automotive batteries are the most-recycled consumer products in the United States, at a rate of 99%.
