Frank Kelly looks forward to seeing the reaction to a new comedy about three priests living on an island off the coast of Ireland. Gerry Ryan talks to actor, comedian, and entertainer Frank Kelly about his new role as Father Jack Hackett in Channel 4's 'Father Ted’. The cast also includes Dermot Morgan as Father Ted Crilly, Ardal O’Hanlon as Father Dougal McGuire, and Pauline McLynn as Mrs Doyle the housekeeper. ‘Father Ted’ was written by Irish writers Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan and is set on a fictional island off the coast of Ireland ‘Craggy Island’. It’s a surreal sitcom set on an island that exists nowhere off the coast of Ireland. As a massgoer himself, Frank Kelly feels that priests will especially identify with the characters and the show's humor. He describes his own character of Father Jack as "outrageous" and commends the quality of the writing which is very funny but without any "paddywhackery". The first episode of ‘Father Ted’ was broadcast on Channel 4 on 21 April 1995. The series is a Hat Trick production. This episode of ‘Gerry Ryan Tonight’ was broadcast on 19 April 1995. The presenter is Gerry Ryan.
