(19 Jan 2019) U.S. President Donald Trump paid tribute to the four Americans killed in a suicide bomb attack in Syria this week at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The trip hadn't been on Trump's public schedule for Saturday, but he tweeted the news before he left the White House. The president, along with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, stood on the tarmac and saluted as a U.S. Navy carry team moved a transfer case carrying the remains of Scott A. Wirtz to a military van. Wirtz, a civilian and former Navy Seal from St Louis, Missouri, was killed January 16th 2019 in a suicide bombing in Manbij, Syria. The bombing was the deadliest assault on U.S. troops in Syria since American forces moved into the country in 2015. It came about a month after Trump said the Islamic State group had been defeated and he was withdrawing U.S. forces. The Pentagon has identified three of the four Americans killed in the attack. Killed along with Wirtz was Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan R. Farmer, 37, of Boynton Beach, Florida and Navy Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Shannon M. Kent, 35, of Pine Plains, New York. The Pentagon hasn't identified the fourth casualty, a civilian contractor. Although the president will pay respects for the other three casualties, pool television cameras were not allowed to record those dignified transfers. The visit comes during a budget fight that has consumed Washington for the past month, shuttering parts of the federal government and leaving hundreds of thousands of workers without pay.
