These hardworking families originally came from the surrounding areas of Kohistan and Batagram, settling here decades ago. Their gold-collecting tradition has been passed down through generations. Standing for hours in freezing river water, digging through heavy sand and stones, and searching for tiny particles of gold requires incredible patience and strength. What looks like ordinary mud to us is a day’s survival for them. Before the 1970s, when this region was under the rule of a local raja, these gold collectors used to pay tax for extracting gold. After the area became part of Pakistan, the tax ended — but their struggle remained the same. Even today, their livelihood depends entirely on daily hard work and whatever amount of gold they manage to find. Some days they earn well, and some days they go home with almost nothing.
