The BBC are doing a version of The Room in the Tower by E F Benson this Christmas, but the one I am presenting here is better. It was adapted by my old mate Ben Brinicombe (you'll have heard his voice in Ashridge) and I have two small parts in it. Honestly, I think he's done a top notch job here. I was bowled over by the twist. Fantastic work. Prove me wrong. It begins as a childhood dream—a recurring sequence of entering the red brick house with the tower, the tea in the garden, and the ever silent family. And for fifteen years, the dream has grown. The people inside it are aging, some disappear, and all the while, the house get bigger, and its hold grows on the dreamer. And always, it ends at the door of the room in the tower. John seeks therapy to deal with this nightmare, but some stories are not meant to be shared. Then, when a real-world invitation leads to a house that matches the dream down to the last ivy leaf, the question is no longer why the dream persists, but what has been waiting all this time for John to finally arrive. Publication Details "The Room in the Tower" was first published in the 1912 collection The Room in the Tower and Other Stories. It remains one of the most celebrated examples of Edwardian Gothic horror, exploring themes of fate and predestination. Author Biography E.F. Benson (1867–1940) was a prolific English novelist and short story writer, best known for his Mapp and Lucia series and his "spook stories" that emphasized psychological dread over gore. Ben Brinicombe, who adapted this version, is a contemporary writer and actor known for his work in audio drama and his ability to modernize classic macabre literature for a new generation of listeners.
