Lake Peipus, A Large Freshwater Lake Situated In The Northeastern Part Of Europe. Located Between The Countries Of Estonia And Russia, South Of The Gulf Of Finland, Lake Peipus Covers A Total Surface Area Of Roughly 3555 Square Kilometres, Making It The Largest Transboundary Lake In Europe And The Fifth Largest Lake On The European Continent After Lake Ladoga, Lake Onega, Lake Vänern, And Lake Saimaa . The Lake Has A Length Of Roughly 133 Kilometers And Is Around 48 Kilometers Wide At Its Widest Point. The Lake Has An Elongated, Irregular Shape And Comprises Of Three Different Basins Known By Different Names. Lake Peipus In The North Is The Main And Largest Section, Shared By Russia And Estonia . While Lake Pskov, The Southernmost Section Is Located Mainly In Russia. These Two Sections Are Connected By A Narrow Waterway Called Lake Lämmijärv. These Three Basins Have Varying Depths, Lake Peipus In The North Is The Deepest Of The Three, With An Average Depth Of 8.3 M, And Maximum Depth Of 12.9 M, Lake Paskov In The South Is Shallower With A Average Depth Of 3.8 M, And Maximum Depth Of 5.3 M. Lake Lammijarv, Is Also Shallower With An Average Depth Of 2.5 M, And Maximum Depth Of 15.3 Meters And Acts A Transition Zone From The Deeper Waters Of Lake Peipus To Shallower Waters Of Lake Pskov. As A Whole, Lake Peipus Is Relatively Shallow, With An Average Depth Of Around 7.1 Meters (23 Feet) And A Maximum Depth Of 15.3 Meters (50 Feet). The Total Water Volume Of The Lake Is 25 Cubic Kilometers. This Three Basins, Although Known By Different Names, Are Collectively Known As Lake Peipus. Despite Its Vast Size, There Are No Large Cities Directly On The Shores Of Lake Peipus. The Largest Nearby Urban Centers Are Tartu, Which Is Situated In Estonia, And Pskov In Russia, However Both Are Located Some Distance Away From The Lake. The Largest Rivers Are The Emajõgi And The Velikaya River, Contributing Roughly 80% Of The Entire Inflow. The Lake Is Drained By Only One River, The Narva, Into The Gulf Of Finland. V There Are A Total Of 30 Islands Located On Lake Peipus,. Some Of The Largest Are Kolpino, Kamenka, Piirissaar Islands, And The Talabski Islands (Made Up Of Belova, Zalita And Talavenets) In The Center Of Pihkva Lake.
