Crickey Mate! Come along with me as I live out my American childhood dream and go to the @australiazoo. I grew up watching the Crocodile Hunter non stop and Steve Irwin inspired me to explore the world around me and appreciate wildlife. Every time crocodile hunter came on @animalplanet I was watching! When I went down under to meet my Australian boyfriends family, I couldn't wait to go to the Australia Zoo with them. I was staying in Brisbane when I visited the zoo. It's totally a doable day trip when visiting Brisbane. You get to drive along the Steve Irwin highway to get there and see the glasshouse mountains. Once we got there we explored the front of the park stopping by the otters and chuckling at the American alligators. One show at the crocoseum and you will think American Alligators are child's play. We then went through the koala exhibit and all my fluffy koala dreams came true. I got to safely pet a koala! This is by far one of the coolest things I have ever done at zoo. It was sooooo soft and sweet. Next we headed over to the tiger show and learned about how the zoo enriches habitats for predators. This was a great show. We then walked through the kangaroo exhibit and guess what...I got to pet a kangaroo. After that it was finally time to see the most iconic part of the Australia Zoo. We went over to the crocoseum. I grew up watching Steve Irwin showcase just how amazing crocodiles are. Being here and hearing the crowd cheer Crickey was truly special. Absolutely nothing can prepare you for seeing just how large a saltwater crocodile actually is. Legitimately they are living dinosaurs! These apex predators may be terrifying, but in the true spirit of the Irwin family, the show highlights that they still deserve to respected and protected. They are an essential part of the Australian ecosystem. We ended the day at a very special exhibit the tortoise habitat. Until 2006 Steve Irwin cared for a tortoise named Harriet, who was originally taken from the Galapagos Islands by Charles Darwin. The 175 year old tortoise was an icon at the zoo until she passed in 2006 just a few months before Steve. I have been all over the world at this point and truly visiting the Australia Zoo was my favorite travel day ever. I highly recommend visiting the Australia Zoo. It truly is something special.
