The Vice President of India holds the second-highest constitutional position after the President. As per Articles 63 to 71 of the Indian Constitution, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, but not by the general public. Unlike in the U.S., where the Vice President succeeds the President in case of death, India does not follow this. The Vice President also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and must be an Indian citizen, at least 35 years old. Following the recent resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Election Commission is expected to announce new election dates soon. After the resignation of India’s Vice President, when and how will the new Vice President be selected? The voting for the Vice President elections will take place on 9th September. In Vice President elections, only members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha are allowed to vote. Voting begins after the nominations are finalized, and the election uses the STV (Single Transferable Vote) system. In this system, each MP marks their vote on the ballot paper by writing numbers like 1, 2, 3 in front of the candidates' names — indicating their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd preference. First, all the “1st preference” votes are counted. If any candidate gets more than 50% of the votes, they are declared the Vice President. But if no one gets over 50%, then the candidate with the least number of 1st preference votes is eliminated. The votes of MPs who had given their 1st preference to the eliminated candidate are then transferred to their 2nd preference. This process continues until one candidate gets more than 50% of the votes and is elected as the Vice President.
