Tour the remains of the rare moated Hemyock Castle, Devon. Comparisons with the original 1380 castle. On 5th November 1380, young King Richard II granted Sir William and Lady Margaret Asthorpe a "licence to crenellate" their fortified manor house at Hemyock; with a "wall of lime and stone." Effectively, "planning permission" to build a castle. Following two brutal sieges in 1643/44 during the English Civil War, the castle was "slighted" (destroyed) and its stone sold for buildings. The site and structures were later converted into a farm. It is now a privately owned scheduled ancient monument, and a residential site. Due to COVID-19, the site is currently closed to physical visitors. This video tour compares and contrasts the scheduled ancient monument with a model depicting the complete 1380 castle, which was created using available records. This video was created for Heritage Open Days 2020. First released at the start of #HODs2020 on 11th September 2020.
