Ed's Meniere's Disease: Chronic Illness Coping and 5 Stages of Grief

Ed's Meniere's Disease: Coping - 5 Stages and Trajectory of Grief GREAT Support Blog Web Site: DailyStrength DOT org Search for Meniere's Disease This Video is EVERYONE out there who has a chronic illness or has just suffered an acute devastating illness. I think it is especially for not only the ill person but also for the family and friends who have to support him or her. The acute period (about first 4 to 8 months) is absolutely the worse. EVERYONE goes through the 5 stages of grief (variable Expression of it). I just hope everyone has the social support to help them cope and accept their condition. I am ABSOLUTELY NOT staying you should stop looking for a cure or relief or satisfactory diagnosis. (I will ALWAYS be looking for a cure or fix = it is part of my coping mechanism) BUT What I am saying is that no matter what the final outcome of your illness, YOU need to deal with your symptoms and illness. Only AFTER some acceptance can you rationally and realistically and hopefully find a solution. As of Feb 2012, I have had Meniere's Disease since June 2010 = 18 months which for me has seemed a life time. The problem with chronic diseases is that there is absolutely NO relief. There are good days and very bad ones, BUT the discomfort, pain, CONSTANT ringing, "not right" feeling NEVER give chronic Meniere's suffers a break. 24 hours a day EVERY waking and sleeping moment since June 2012, I have had CONSTANT tinnitus AND Right Ear deafness with weekly fugue, fullness, and nausea and vertigo. I was a fully healthy and active person before the MD hit. I just completed a triathlon. I was working full time and a rising star at work. In nothing flat I was feeling ill (nauseated , vertigo) ALL the time and being driven crazy by self Generated 100 Decibel whine in my head. I went through all the 5 stages of grief and was doing better. The symptoms were better or at least I have learned to deal with them. HOWEVER, life is dynamic and Meniere's is a chronic disease. January 2012, I started having tinnitus in my "Good" Left ear. Unfortunately now have NEW acute 20% hearing loss in that ear with the 50% loss in the original Bad Right Ear. What is ABSOLUTELY the worse is now the Tinnitus is in 24/7 STEREO (Left side worse than the right). I am going through the 5 stages of grief AGAIN, but this time I think it will be shorter because at least this time I know what to expect -- or at least know what (however ugly and bad) the possibilities are for my Meniere's Disease. 1. Denial — "I feel fine." "This can't be happening, not to me."
Denial is usually only a temporary defense for the individual. This feeling is generally replaced with heightened awareness of possessions and individuals that will be left behind after illness or death. 2. Anger — "Why me? It's not fair!"; "How can this happen to me?"; '"Who is to blame?"
Once in the second stage, the individual recognizes that denial cannot continue. Because of anger, the person is very difficult to care for due to misplaced feelings of rage and envy. 3. Bargaining — "I'll do anything for a few more years."; "I will give my life savings if..."
The third stage involves the hope that the individual can somehow postpone or delay illness or death. Usually, the negotiation for an extended life is made with a higher power in exchange for a reformed lifestyle. Psychologically, the individual is saying, "I understand I am ill, but if I could just do something to buy more time..." 4. Depression — "I'm so sad, why bother with anything?"; "I'm going to ill for the rest of my life - so what's the point... What's the point?"; "I miss my loved one, why go on?"
During the fourth stage, the ill person begins to understand the chronic nature of the illness. Because of this, the individual may become silent, refuse visitors and spend much of the time crying and grieving. This process allows the sick person to disconnect from things of love and affection. It is not recommended to attempt to cheer up an individual who is in this stage. It is an important time for grieving that must be processed. Acceptance — "It's going to be okay."; "I can't fight it, I may as well do my best to deal with it."
In this last stage, individuals begin to come to terms with their illness and their mortality. Trajectories of Grief: Resiliance - Bouncing back and being positive Recovery - Returning to normal after Depression Stage Chronic Dysfunction - Not Returning to baseline character or function Delayed Grief or Trauma - Long form of Denial with suppression of feelings GREAT Support Meniere's Support Web Site: DailyStrenght DOT Org - Search Meniere's. I check there regularly - trying to offer some support and advice.
