Over the last 8 years, Hartlepool has had a number of different managers. In 1999 Chris Turner took over the club and lead Hartlepool to three consecutive play-off campaigns. Mid-way through his fourth season he had taken Hartlepool to the top of the table, before leaving to join Sheffield Wednesday and was replaced by Mike Newell. After a bright start Newell lost a 16 point lead at the top of the table to finish second behind Rushden and Diamonds. Newell's contract was not renewed and he was replaced by Neale Cooper. Cooper then took Pools to two consecutive League 1 play-offs. However, he left 1 game before his second play-off campaign and was replaced by Martin Scott. Things did not work out with Martin Scott and Hartlepool plunged into a relegation fight. Scott was sacked and replaced by Paul Stephenson. Chris Turner rejoined as Director of Sport but they could not save Hartlepool. Turner then helped to appoint Danny Wilson who took Pools up at the first attempt.
