But more than being my friend, Gene Cernan was an important part of American history. Gene as we all know was the last many to walk on the moon. Various of casket being carried out of church STORYLINE: Friends and family members remembered Capt. Gene Cernan, who died last week at age 82, during a funeral service held for the former astronaut in Houston. Cernan is remembered as the last person to walk on the moon. The service was held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. A private burial with full military honors was scheduled for later in the day at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. Cernan died last week at a Houston hospital of a variety of ailments.
