Despite the fact that the Qing Dynasty was a rather conservative time in China’s history, most of the civilization’s gay paintings sprang from this period. The fact of the matter is that by and large the Chinese never regarded homosexuality as being abnormal or sinful, in fact many educated scholars, businessmen, and government officials would frequent male brothels and develop sexual relationships with men. Of course, with China being as Confucian as it’s always been most of these men also had wives and families, which (based on the social norms of this time) was not at all inconsistent with their hedonistic escapades with guys. This sort of libertine infatuation with sex of any kind reached its zenith in the Ming Dynasty, but it was in the subsequent dynasty (Qing) that Chinese artists sought to depict these sexual displays in graphic visual detail. So, not only do we have troves of heterosexual and same-sex art involving men, but female same-sex art figures prominently as well. All in all, the Qing Dynasty served as a decisive turning point in the development of China’s homoerotic art. Here are the links (全部都是英語的)!
