The lives of conjoined twins have always fascinated the world, and two unforgettable stories—those of Ganga & Jamuna Shrestha from Nepal and Ladan & Laleh Bijani from Iran—captured global attention in the early 2000s. Their journeys of courage, hope, and heartbreaking outcomes unfolded in Singapore, where groundbreaking surgeries attempted to give them independence. Ganga & Jamuna Shrestha — Nepal/Singapore (2001 Separation) Born in 1970 in Kathmandu, Nepal, Ganga and Jamuna Shrestha were craniopagus twins—joined at the head. For more than three decades, they faced daily struggles, from mobility challenges to constant health complications. Yet their resilience and spirit inspired many. In 2001, Singapore General Hospital became the stage for their extraordinary separation surgery. A team of skilled surgeons worked tirelessly for hours, and the operation was declared successful. After the separation, the Shrestha twins began the difficult adjustment of living as individuals for the first time. Their story symbolized hope, medical achievement, and the determination of two sisters who longed for freedom. Ladan & Laleh Bijani — Iran/Singapore (2003, Both Died) Two years later, another case shocked the world. Ladan and Laleh Bijani, born in Iran in 1974, had always dreamed of living independent lives. Despite being conjoined at the head, they pursued separate ambitions—Ladan studied law, while Laleh dreamed of journalism. In 2003, after years of searching for doctors, they traveled to Raffles Hospital in Singapore for the surgery they had always hoped for. The operation lasted more than 50 hours and was followed worldwide. Tragically, both sisters died from massive blood loss during the final stages. Their bravery and determination to pursue independence—despite the risks—left a lasting impression across the globe. Legacy of Courage and Determination These two conjoined twin stories show both the possibilities and limits of modern medicine. The Shrestha sisters’ successful separation gave hope, while the Bijani sisters’ tragic ending reminded the world of the immense risks involved. Even today, the names Ganga & Jamuna Shrestha and Ladan & Laleh Bijani live on in documentaries, medical history, and public memory. Their journeys remain among the most powerful and unforgettable stories of conjoined twins ever told. IMPORTANT INFORMATION This video contains images that were used under a Creative Commons License.
